Well, it’s that time of year again: School time! Your kids might not be too excited about it, and you also may be dreading what’s coming down the pike, but it is very important that both you and your child are ready for this new school year.
Kids will have to readjust to school life. The hours are different, the demands placed on them are much higher, and there are plenty of extra rules to follow that they weren’t dealing with while enjoying their summer vacation.
Parents, read up on these ten tips to help you and your child adjust for the new school year.
Top 10 Back-to-School Tips for Kids
1: Check out the School
Before you take on the task of school shopping and beginning to mentally prepare your child to attend a school, your first step should be checking out the school for yourself. If anything, it’s a smart idea to get a layout of the school, where it’s located, surrounding landmarks, etc, especially for younger children. You can also take this time to see what types of facilities the school has.
Knowing the layout of the school also helps you show your child around.
2: Meet the Teachers
Unless you’re sending your child to a very small school, it is unlikely that you will be able to pull a meet-and-greet with every teacher. And most schools do not hand out classroom schedules until a week or so in advance, so you might not have time to meet with all of your child’s teachers specifically. But you can take the opportunity here to meet some of the staff and gauge their attitude about teaching. Remember: these are the adults who are charged with caring for your child 180 days a year, 7 hours a day.
Knowing about the school and its teachers will certainly help in preparing your children for attending the school.
3: Get in the Habit of Routines
From sleepy summer mornings to school-time wakeups can be a real shock for your child. Before school starts, begin to set new routines so that your child will be ready when the day gets here. Gradually falling into a new routine will also help you as a parent for the road ahead.
4: Emphasize Good Health
Being physically and mentally strong is something we as adults take seriously, mostly because we know the ill side effects of allowing our health to lapse. However, a lot of us assume that our kids are chipping and energetic on their own. But with home game consoles and cell phones and computers, your child may be in need of some exercise before the school year starts. Place emphasis on a healthy diet and activity before school starts to ensure your child is in peak condition.
5: Shop Early
A lot of parents wait for the local back-to-school sale before they start shopping, but most of the supplies your child needs are not expensive at all and can be purchased off-sale for a few dollars more. Shopping in advance, if practical for your family, will help get your child prepared. Allow your child to load up his or her book-bag and go over routines and the supplies needed for school.
6: Safety Time
Even if you have a teenager, every safety tip under the sun bears repeating. You should go over backpack safety, bus safety, walking/bicycle safety, and speak about avoiding adults they do not know and never, ever leaving school property unless you are directly notified first.
7: Offer Explanations
One of the best ways to help prepare your child for the school year is to explain certain things they may not be able to understand. A bully, for example, is something your child should know about in order to avoid one and even to avoid becoming one (yes, most bullies have parents, and you know you don’t want it to be your child).
8: Start Homework Early
If you have time in your schedule, you should begin giving your child some assignments to do before he or she starts the new year. They can be simple tasks, like writing a paragraph about why they’re excited (or not excited) to restart school, or even something like handling basic math problems.
9: Weaning off Technology
With all the many mobile devices out there, televisions, video games and other distractions, the odds are high that your child is spending a lot of his or her time wrapped up in technology. Whether we’re talking about playing Mortal Kombat all day or texting to friends, you need to wean them off of this technology so it’s not such a shock once they start the school year.
10: Go Easy on Them
You may be a little frantic and worried that your child will not adjust, but children actually adjust better in most situations than adults do. So if your child seems to be slow to come around to the start of a new year, give it a little bit of time and a little encouragement. Do not go off the deep end and put pressure on the kid. Being social and learning comes naturally to most children.
As your child progresses through school, this time of the year will become a lot easier. You will get the hang of it and your kids will be adjusted to returning to school. If you can follow these few tips, you should have little trouble with the transition.
