Architects create blueprints for buildings and personal residences, and they design residential and commercial developments. Architects also create blueprints for churches, schools, and airports. Architects should be creative, able to envision projects, and communicate their vision effectively to others. To develop good visual skills, taking art courses can help. It is recommended that potential architects understand how to use a computer.

In 2006, architects in the 50th percentile of wages made between $49,780-83,450 annually. The bottom 10th percentile made $39,420 or less while the upper 10th percentile made $104,970 or more annually.

During 2008, there were nearly 132,000 architects throughout the United States. The majority of architects were employed by small companies. Nearly 20 percent ran their own businesses, meaning these architects ran their own companies or worked as partners. Certain architects were employed by governments or construction companies.
What is the future outlook for this career?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth for architects to increase at higher rates than growth in other industries until 2016. However, there is a lot of completion for those beginning careers in this industry since many people are interested in working as architects, so those that gained experience during an internship or a part time job during college will improve their chances of getting a job. Since technology is gaining importance in the industry, individuals that understand computer design and drafting software improves their employment marketability.
