Automotive Mechanic
Automotive service technicians and mechanics repair automobiles. They must diagnose problems rapidly and properly, so they must thoroughly understand how cars operate.
The way repairs are conducted has evolved through the years. In the past, mechanics would perform basic repairs. However, now repairs are usually completed with sophisticated computers since newer automobiles are electronically operated. Usually computers diagnose problems and analyze performance. Once students have successfully completed all their classes, they receive a certificate or associate’s degree. Since many programs require students to purchase tools, once training is completed, technicians will have the tools necessary to begin their new careers.

How much will I earn?
During 2008, technicians with wages in the 50th percentile made between $11.96-$21.56 an hour. The lower 10th percentile made $9.17 an hour or less while the upper 10 percentile made $27.22 an hour or more.
Technicians with years of experience working for dealerships or other shops frequently earn commissions determined by the cost of each repair, so their salaries are affected by the weekly volume of cars in the shop. Certain technicians join labor unions.
How many jobs are there?
During 2008, 773,000 people worked as technicians and mechanics. The majority were employed by dealerships, repair shops, or parts stores. Some were employed by rental car companies, gas stations, and hardware stores selling auto parts. Job growth for mechanics and technicians should increase at a faster rate than growth in other industries until 2016. Once more mechanics begin to retire, more jobs will be available. Most mechanics and technicians enjoy job security since recessions do not hurt the automotive repair industry. Newly created jobs at smaller businesses and auto dealerships will lead to increased job growth in the industry.
