Students interested in math and science frequently pursue careers in chemistry. They also enjoy hands on experimentation. Students interested in chemistry careers need to be independent thinkers, diligent students, and detail oriented. They should be able to work alone and understand how to use a computer.

Some companies seek chemists with business knowledge or experience. They also recruit individuals with leadership and communication skills.

Salaries for chemists are usually determined by degree levels. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reported that salaries for new chemists that have completed chemistry bachelor’s programs averaged $41,506 annually during the summer of 2007. Salaries for chemists with salaries in the 50th percentile were between $44,780-82,610 annually during 2008. The lower 10th percentile made $35,480 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $106,310 or more annually.

How many jobs are there?

During 2008, 93,000 chemists and materials scientists were employed in the United States. Nearly 40 percent worked for factories, many specializing in chemical production. Chemical manufacturing facilities produce organic chemicals, paints, pharmaceuticals, household cleaning products, plastics, and numerous other materials. Some chemists are employed by research labs while some work for government agencies. Many chemists teach at schools.

What is the future outlook for this career?

Job growth for chemists and materials scientists is projected to increase at the same rate as growth in other industries until 2016. Numerous opportunities will exist in the consumer goods and pharmaceutical industries. During recessions, it may be more difficult for chemists to acquire jobs in other businesses.

Many companies heavily recruit individuals with post graduate degrees. Chemists with bachelor's degrees can become employed as research assistants.
