Computer Hardware Engineer
Computer hardware engineers supervise hardware installation, design new hardware technologies, and test newly developed technology. Computer hardware is the physical components of computer systems, such as screens and hard drives, while software operates computer systems.
They have similar duties as electronics engineers; however, they exclusively specialize in computer technology. Rapid computer technological innovation can be attributed to these engineers. To continually develop these innovations, they must be constantly learning.
How do you prepare for this career?
To get an entry level job in computer hardware engineering candidates must have an engineering bachelor's degree. A few jobs are available for those with science or math degrees.
Those admitted to computer hardware engineering programs usually have very good grades in computer science, math, English, and their other courses. After entering a program, certain schools prepare students for advanced degrees while some prepare students for the workforce. Students should become familiar with program details before making a commitment.
How much will I earn?
Salaries for computer hardware engineers in the 50th percentile were between $69,500-111,030 annually during 2008. The lower 10th percentile made $53,910 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $135,260 or more annually.
How many jobs are there?
There are fewer computer hardware engineers compared to other professionals specializing in computer technology. During 2008, nearly 79,000 were employed throughout the United States. Computer hardware engineers usually worked for companies that manufacture hardware while some were employed by companies that design computer systems.
What is the future outlook for this career?
Job growth for computer hardware engineers is projected to increase at a smaller rate than expected growth in other industries at least until 2016. This is partly because of competition from foreign manufacturers. However, there will still be available jobs for Americans since the number of applicants will not exceed openings.
