Computer Software Engineer
Because of the importance of computers in modern society, there is constant demand for new software. Computer software engineers design and perform tests on new software programs.
Software engineers must first determine what consumers need. After this is done, they create and troubleshoot new software programs. To create programs, they develop codes, commands that instruct computers how to operate. Programmers must be trained to write code, but while writing code, they frequently create new algorithms.
Software engineers frequently collaborate with other computer and business professionals to develop new technologies, which could include engineers and marketing professionals.
Computer applications software engineers plan, maintain, and troubleshoot programs. They can work with individual clients or create programs to mass produce programs to be sold commercially.
Computer systems software engineers develop and troubleshoot programs for individual companies which could include accounting and payroll programs. These professionals frequently install an intranet, a computer network exclusive to a single company. Software engineers frequently build and install complex systems.
Software engineers usually conduct their work in brightly lit laboratories or office complexes. They usually work 40 hour weeks. To meet project deadlines, they frequently work evenings and weekends. Since they spend long amounts of time in front of computers, many experience back and eye problems, as well as carpel tunnel syndrome.
Software engineers working as consultants or vendor representatives frequently travel to meet with clients. Since computer networks continue to grow, many problems can be remotely solved using a laptop connected to the Internet.
How do you prepare for this career?
Most companies recruit individuals with a bachelor's degree and diverse experience with various technologies. Software engineers usually study computer systems, software engineering, and computer science during college. Companies seek individuals with advanced degrees for difficult jobs.
Students that have completed internships improve their chances of getting a job. Big companies occasionally hire recent college graduates without work experience with the intent to train them.
How much will I earn?
Computer applications software engineers with salaries in the 50th percentile made between $62,830-98,470 annually during 2008. The lower 10th percentile made $49,350 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $119,770 or more annually during 2008.
Computer systems software engineers with salaries in the 50th percentile made between $67,620-105,330 annually during 2008. The lower 10th percentile made $53,580 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $125,750 or more annually.
How many jobs are there?
During 2008, nearly 857,000 computer software engineers were employed throughout the United States. They can be found in every type of business, but nearly one third are employed by companies specializing in developing computer systems. Companies hiring these engineers can include small businesses or major corporations. Many of these engineers find jobs as consultants or take temporary positions.
What is the future outlook for this career?
Software engineers are expected to enjoy many job opportunities in a rapidly growing industry up until 2016. As a result, many opportunities will be available for experienced engineers and college graduates. Companies will heavily recruit software engineers experienced with system analysis and programming, as well as seek employees that understand basic business concepts with effective communication skills.
