Drafter

Drafters prepare blueprints. Building and manufacturing professionals use blueprints to complete construction and manufacturing projects. Blueprints can either depict detailed instructions for consumer products or construction projects such as office complexes and homes.

Blueprints prepared by drafters are very detailed with specific instructions, exact measurements, and information about project supplies.

Drafters utilize their knowledge of engineering and math to prepare blueprints. They can convert a simple drawing into precise building instructions and details.

The majority of drafters complete their work and edits with computer technology known as Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) technology. However, certain drafters still rely on traditional drawing techniques to prepare blueprints.

There are a variety of drafting specialties. Aeronautical drafter s prepare blueprints for airplane and missile designs. Architectural drafters prepare blueprints for construction projects. Civil draftesr prepare blueprints for infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, and tunnels. Electrical drafters prepare blueprints for wiring systems and other electrical machines. Process piping or pipeline drafters prepare blueprints for piping systems and gas and oil pipelines.

Drafters usually work normal 40 hour weeks in cozy office buildings. Most of their days are spent in front of computers.

Companies recruit drafters that have acquired some college level training. Many vocational training, community, and state colleges offer drafting programs.

Salaries for architectural and civil drafters in the 50th percentile were between $33,550-52,220 annually during 2008. Architectural and civil drafters with salaries near the lower 10th percentile were $27,010 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile were $63,310 or more annually.

Salaries for mechanical drafters in the 50th percentile were between $34,680-55,130 annually. Mechanical drafters with salaries in the lower 10th percentile were $28,230 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile were $67,860 or more annually.

Salaries for electrical and electronics drafters in the 50th percentile were between $36,660-60,160 annually. Those in the lower 10th percentile made $29,290 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $74,490 or more annually.

How many jobs are there?

During 2008, there were nearly 253,000 drafters employed in the United States. There were more architectural and civil drafters than other drafting specialists, followed by mechanical drafters during this period.

What is the future outlook for this career?

Growth for drafting jobs is projected to increase at a slower rate than growth in other industries at least until 2016. Individuals that have completed 2 years of formal training or more should have better job opportunities.
