Electrical Engineering Lab Reports
 When you're faced with turning in a lab report in your electrical engineering class, you have a very small margin of era in the writing portion of the project. Although you may think it wise to employ your creative nature and translate it into the text of your report, any writing that’s not seen as technical is going to fail.
Technical writing is a journey. You're learning about how engineering components and principles work and then translating them to paper. You'll encounter plenty of unexpected aspects and be expected to write about them with complete understanding.
In order to properly do this, you not only have to know what a lab report "is," but also what's expected of the report in terms of writing style, and especially how to construct a format.
Defining a Lab Report
Basically, a lab report is a detailed account of an experiment you've conducted and what you discovered within. Lab reports present the data in a logical format, discuss the results in detail and ultimately provide conclusions.
Lab reports will provide students with the hands-on experience necessary to pursue electrical engineering as a career. Learning how to experiment and speculate is an important part of the course.
Knowing the Audience
For a school report, your audience is going to be your peers and superiors. This means that the text of the report needs to flow logically, contain all necessary facts and figures, and eliminate any fictional elements you may put into the report.
Even though other electrical engineers are going to read your report, you should still also assume that part of your audience isn't going to understand any aspects that are overtly technical. The idea here is to be touch on the technicalities of the processes without losing readers in the jargon. This means you should write clearly and concisely, attempting to explain things at every turn.
A lab report explains the process instead of simply speaking about its elements.
Different Types of Reports
Not every project you do for electrical engineering will require a report. Some projects—mostly on a smaller scale—only require you to document the various facts and figures without tying it all in together via a report. For larger projects, you will need to elaborate your results and flesh out the report.
A project report is also similar to a lab report, although it doesn't convey quite as much information as the latter. Throughout your studies, you'll have to work up three separate types of reports for electrical engineering: lab reports, project reports, and perspective project reports.
General Formatting Rules
Like any type of writing you do, lap reports require a certain structure. If you don’t follow the generally accepted template, there's a good chance that you could ultimately fail the assignment. Even if you reach the right conclusion via your report, it could all go up in smoke if it's structured wrong.
Each teacher will have different header requirements, bullet-point likes and dislikes, and perhaps even a love for little footnotes. But to understand the general format, here is how most lap reports are structured:
- Title Page
- Abstract text
- Introduction
- Experimentation
- Results of Experiment
- Discussion and Conclusion
- References
- Graphics and Illustrations
Additional Resources
Researching and studying are the best ways to help you achieve success in a lab report. Trial and error can also be used, but it's incredibly risky to hand in work that way, not to mention extremely time consuming to go through the motions until you strike gold.
Emulation will help, and to that end you can find countless resources on the Internet and at the library. You can also speak to other students, join study groups, consult an expert in the field, or ask your teacher for help in formatting and writing your lap reports.
With so much information out there to assist you, there's absolutely no excuse for turning in a subpar report.
