Engineering Technician
Engineering technicians resolve technical errors. Some collaborate with engineers and other scientific professionals to conduct research. Engineering technicians also perform experiments, calculate information collected from these experiments, and assemble machinery. Some technicians develop models of new machinery, and many specialize in quality control. Technicians employed by manufacturing companies frequently assist other engineers during product development and improvement.
Most technicians become specialists. Those specializing in civil engineering, for example, assist and collect information for engineers during infrastructure projects.

Salaries for engineering technicians in the 50th percentile were between $39,270-60,470 annually during 2008. Those with salaries in the lower 10th percentile made $30,120 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $73,200 or more annually.
Civil engineering technicians with salaries in the 50th percentile were between $31,310-51,230 annually during 2008. Those with salaries in the lowest 10th percentile made $25,250 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $62,920 or more annually.

During 2008, nearly 511,000 engineering technicians were employed in the United States. 50 percent specialized in civil, electronics, or civil engineering and nearly 35 percent were employed by manufacturing companies.

Job growth for engineering technicians is projected to grow at the same growth rate as other industries until 2016. Many firms that specialize in product development will employ technicians to create more efficient products.
