Judge
Judges preside over court trials. They ensure trials are fair for all parties involved. They settle problems between attorneys. They interpret the law to determine what attorneys are permitted to do during a trial.
Judges frequently determine what cases should be heard in court, and they consult juries about legal issues.
Before issuing legal decisions, judges conduct legal research. Judges also prepare written statements supporting their decisions. Occasionally, they seek assistance from law clerks or attorneys while conducting legal research.
If someone on trial is convicted, judges determine whether that individual will receive a jail term and the length of the term. During non criminal civil trials, judges frequently determine monetary awards.
Judges' responsibilities vary. Some judges preside over the trials of people accused of serious offenses, such as murder or robbery. Some judges preside over traffic ticket and small claim disputes. Some preside over cases involving environmental issues, Social Security benefit disputes, and a variety of other issues.
Judges must thoroughly understand the law, be patient, and exercise prudent judgment.

Potential judges must complete college and have some prior legal experience. Many judges had previous careers as attorneys. In most circumstances, judges in federal or state courts were attorneys prior to their judgeship appointment. Since all attorneys must complete a 3 year program in law school, most judges attended law school.
For those wanting to become judges, it is a good idea to enroll in English courses to enhance research and writing skills. Social studies courses frequently cover legal topics and require students to conduct research. Those wishing to serve as a judge must also have very good reading skills.
