Physicist
Physicists specialize in the natural world, from the most minuscule atom to the physical wonders of the vast universe. They conduct experiments to discover the physical laws of the universe. During 2008, nearly 18,000 physicists and astronomers were employed. Nearly 38 percent of available opportunities were found in research and design companies. Nearly 21 percent of physicists were employed by the Defense Department or NASA. Some physicists conducted research or taught at universities or colleges.
What is the future outlook for this career?
Job growth for physicists is projected to increase nearly as quickly as average growth in other industries until 2016. However, competition for available jobs will be intense. Decreased research funding will result in fewer basic research positions, but demand for physicists to work in computer technology and applied science industries will exist.
