Recreational Therapist

Recreational therapists assist people recovering from injuries and illnesses. They utilize exercise, activities, arts, and music to assist patients desiring to enjoy active lifestyles again. These therapists do not recommend exercise programs for recreation.

Recreational therapists determine patients’ needs. This is accomplished by reviewing medical charts and speaking with staff members. They also meet with patients and their loved ones. They then arrange a routine to suit the person’s needs. For example, they could assist a right handed person unable to toss a ball learn how to use the left arm.

Recreational therapists usually work with people at rehab areas in hospitals. They could also assist patients in pools or outdoor fields. They prepare activities and maintain records. They usually work regular schedules, which could include occasional nights, weekends, and holidays.

How do you prepare for this career?

Most potential recreation therapists must obtain a college degree before beginning their careers. More than 130 colleges offer recreation therapist programs throughout the United States. These are usually bachelor's programs, but some are associate’s or advanced programs.

A national board determines whether individuals have met the requirements to be licensed as specialists. They must obtain a bachelor's degree and successfully complete a test.

Recreational therapists should be comfortable assisting the disabled. They must be courteous and patient. They must be able to creatively organize activities to suit their clients’ needs. They must have some athletic ability to demonstrate to their patients how to complete certain exercises.

How much will I earn?

Salaries for recreational therapists in the 50th percentile were between $26,780-44,850 annually during 2008. Those with salaries in the lower 10th percentile made $20,880 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $55,530 or more annually.

How many jobs are there?

During 2008, nearly 25,000 recreational therapists were employed. Nearly 70 percent were employed at nursing care centers and hospitals. A small percentage of recreational therapists ran their own businesses.

What is the future outlook for this career?

Job growth for recreational therapists is projected to increase slower than average growth in other industries until 2016. They will assist aging populations and those with disabilities.

More jobs will be available at convalescent centers, but fewer jobs will be available at hospitals in the near future. Adult day care, social service, physical and mental rehab centers will be where many jobs will be available.
