Statistician

Statisticians prepare experiments and surveys. They also gather, review, and interpret data. Some are employed by private companies or government agencies.

Some statisticians gather data to determine the safety of new consumer goods. This process must be completed before the product is placed in stores.

Statisticians frequently use samples to gather data. A sample provides data about a small group representing a bigger one. Statisticians then apply what they have discovered about the small group to the bigger one.

Statisticians determine the methods of data collection, and locations where it will be collected. Statisticians select the sample size and type of survey to collect data with. They instruct and supervise workers administering surveys. They review the gathered information and make final conclusions. They use computer software to complete these tasks.

Those with bachelor's degrees in statistics can find entry level positions working as statisticians, but those wanting to conduct research should obtain a master's degree. Those wanting to teach and conduct research at universities should obtain a PhD. A master's degree and years of work experience are often required to become employed with a company specializing in industrial research.

As of 2007, over 200 universities offered students the opportunity to major in statistics.

Statisticians frequently use computers to complete their work, so it is essential to understand how to use computers. Effective verbal and written communication skills are also important since statisticians frequently explain their conclusions to others not familiar with statistical concepts.

Salaries for statisticians in the 50th percentile were between $48,480-87,850 annually during 2008. Those with salaries in the lower 10th percentile made $37,010 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $108,630 or more annually.

During 2007, most statisticians beginning their careers after completing a statistics bachelor’s program averaged $46,547 a year.

How many jobs are there?

During 2008, nearly 22,000 statisticians were employed. Nearly 20 percent were employed by federal government agencies while 10 percent of statisticians were employed by universities and various other government departments. Other statisticians were employed by private companies.

Average job growth is projected in this industry through 2016, but individuals with degrees in statistics should find jobs in other industries, especially positions requiring data analyzing and interpreting skills.
