People that enjoy science and animals should consider a career as a veterinarian. Veterinarians treat ill or injured animals. Similar to physicians, they administer medication and perform surgical procedures.
When animals are ill, veterinarians inspect then for a diagnosis. They pay close attention to an animal’s appearance, behavior, and smells. If a dog is staggering, it could be the result of a leg injury. Veterinarians must pay close attention to animals since animals cannot describe their symptoms.
Vets administer blood tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic tests to determine an animal's aliments. Once this is done, they determine what type of medicine to administer.
Vets engage in preventative care by administering vaccinations, fixing teeth, and conducting routine checkup exams. They also instruct pet owners about proper nutrition and exercise for their pets.
Vets use distinctive instruments to conduct surgical procedures. They treat fractured bones, remove tumors, replace hips and knees, and various other procedures. Vets also bandage wounds. They must be prepared to witness organs, blood, and bones.
Most vets care for household pets, including dogs, cats, and hamsters, but some vets treat large animals, including horses and cattle. Large animal vets frequently travel to stalls and ranches to treat these animals. They examine animals for infections and counsel owners about animal care. They frequently assist owners when their animals are delivering offspring.
Some vets are employed by aquariums and zoos. They treat wild animals located in these facilities.
Many vets additionally work as animal inspectors, specialists that exam pens and stalls to ensure cleanliness and safety. Some vets conduct scientific research. They attempt to discover new medications for animals.

How do you prepare for this career?
Veterinarians must complete college. Vets need to complete a bachelor's degree in animal science or another science related major while enrolling in English and math courses. Many individuals acquire experience by volunteering at animal clinics or shelters.
Once they complete their undergraduate degrees, vet must complete 4 years of veterinary college. Getting admitted to veterinary college is difficult. Students granted admission usually have high grade point averages. When they are done with vet college, vets must pass and exam to become licensed.

Salaries for veterinarians in the 50th percentile made between $56,450-94,880 annually during 2008. Those with salaries in the lower 10th percentile made $43,530 or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $133,150 or more annually.
How many jobs are there?
During 2008, nearly 62,000 veterinarian jobs were employed. Nearly 20 percent of veterinarians ran their own clinics. Vets were employed by clinics, hospitals, research centers, colleges, zoos, and pet food companies.
